Literacy Centers Syllabus

Purpose - The purpose of this course is to provide kindergarten English Language Arts students with the skills needed to become proficient readers in order to thrive in and out of the classroom. This course focuses on the PA Core Standards for English Language Arts. The five areas of focus are: Foundational Skills, Reading Informational; Text, Reading Literature; Writing; and Speaking and Listening.
Materials - We will be utilizing a variety of materials during this school year, which include but are not limited to: Step into Reading Kindergarten resources, Step into Reading Writing Curriculum with Writer's Notebook and trade books for introduction of writing concepts.
Assessments and Grading - Reading grades are completed by the classroom teacher, as this is an intervention class. Data from Acadience and DRA 3 will be utilized for formative instruction and grouping.

Throughout the year, I will be working in Mrs. Shutty’s classroom with small groups of students. We will be focusing on reading and writing concepts within the Kindergarten Journey’s Reading curriculum as well as working with phonological and phonemic awareness activities to strengthen reading and decoding skills.
